Hello, in today’s lesson I will be talking about dates, Phoenix dactyifera.
I like dates because they have the sweetest taste ever, in my opinion. Their taste is like honey and more honey and deliciousness.
They are classified as members of the Arecaceae Family. The top producers of dates, in 2019, according to Wikepedia, were Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. Dates belong to the genius Phoenix, and their species is P. Dactyifera.
The harvest season is April to November. They do not ripe after they are harvested, in fact the growers have to cover them so birds and other animals won’t eat them before they’re ripe and ready for harvest. Did you know that it takes 4 to 8 years after you plant a date palm tree for it to produce dates and in a good harvesting season date palms can produce 70 to 140 kg of dates? That’s impressive!
Dates are not only yummy, but they are good for you too. They provide a lot of sugar (a good source of energy for a physically active kid) and some other nutrients like potassium and magnesium.
